A little behind schedule, but Florence never stops moving. Here is what is happening around town.

FLORENCE TAKES HOME TWO STATEWIDE AWARDS

The City of Florence brought home two statewide honors at the August 10 City Council meeting, and both feel like a nod to what this community has been quietly building. The first is the Municipal Achievement Award for public safety, recognizing real, everyday work to keep neighbors safe. The second is the Excellence on Main Street Award, given for the Pine Street Townhomes project downtown. Charlie Barrineau of the Municipal Association of South Carolina was on hand to present both, and it was a good reminder that the progress happening here is being noticed well beyond the Pee Dee.

CAROLINA THEATRE NEARS THE FINISH LINE

After a long wait, the Carolina Theatre is in the home stretch. The renovation downtown has entered its final stages, with interior finish work now underway. For anyone who has watched that building sit quiet and wondered when it would come back to life, the end is finally in sight. A rebuilt landmark is nearly ready to open its doors again, and that is the kind of news worth slowing down for.

YOUTH CITY UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS CLOSE SOON

If you know a high schooler who wants to understand how their city actually works, point them toward the 2026 Youth City University program. It runs seven weeks and gives students a real look inside local government and civic life. The deadline to apply is August 24, and it is coming up fast.

Around town, that is the shape of the week. A safer city, a rebuilt landmark almost ready to open, and a new class of young Florentines about to learn how it all works.
