The Florence County Senior Year Checklist What to Do the Summer Before 12th Grade

FAFSA deadlines. Scholarship windows. FDTC enrollment dates. SC Works registration. Everything Florence students need, in one place, in order.

The summer before senior year is not a break. It is a runway. Every week that passes between June and August is a week that either builds momentum toward graduation or quietly closes a door.

Most Florence families find this out too late. They hear about the FAFSA in October, the Palmetto Fellows deadline in April, and the FDTC registration window after it has already closed.

The checklist below is built for Florence 1 students specifically, with real dates, real programs, and real local resources organized by the month they matter most.

The students who do well in this process are almost never the smartest ones.

They are the ones who started in June.

June: Build the Foundation

School is barely out and senior year feels distant. That distance is the point. Everything you do in June costs you nothing but time and pays you back in October when everyone else is panicking.

College Path

  • 1 Make a list of every school you are considering. Include at least one you are certain to get into, one that stretches you, and one somewhere in between.
  • 2 Request a meeting with your school counselor. Florence 1 counselors know the Palmetto Fellows application process inside out. They must submit the application on your behalf — you cannot do it yourself.
  • 3 Take or retake the SAT or ACT if your score is not where you want it. The June national test administration is the last one that counts toward Palmetto Fellows Early Award eligibility. Register at collegeboard.org or act.org.
  • 4 Create your FSA ID at studentaid.gov. This is the login for the FAFSA. Parents need one too, and both must be created separately. It can take up to three days to verify — do not wait until October.

Trade and Technical Path

  • 1 Review FDTC's full program list at fdtc.edu. FDTC offers more than 60 programs including welding, HVAC, CNA, medical coding, culinary arts, and early childhood education. Summer is the time to identify which one fits.
  • 2 Contact FDTC Admissions at 843-661-8289 or [email protected]. Ask specifically about WIOA funding eligibility and whether your program qualifies for free or reduced-cost training.
  • 3 Ask about FDTC's Early College Academy. Florence 1 students may be able to earn college credit toward an FDTC degree before graduating high school.

Career Readiness

  • 1 Create a free account at jobs.scworks.org. This is South Carolina's largest workforce database. Creating an account now means your profile is active when you need it.
  • 2 Draft a basic resume. Even without work experience, list volunteer work, clubs, or skills. SC Works Pee Dee offers free resume help — no appointment needed.

College Applications

  • 1 Most college applications open August 1. CommonApp and many school-specific applications go live on this date. Begin filling in information and drafting essays even if you are not ready to submit.

Palmetto Fellows — Start the Conversation Now

The Palmetto Fellows Early Award deadline for school counselors is April 15 of your senior year. If you meet the early eligibility criteria, your counselor must submit your application to the SC Commission on Higher Education by that date.

That conversation needs to happen in August, not March.

The Big One

October: FAFSA Opens — Submit Immediately

October 1 is the single most important date on this checklist.

The 2027-28 FAFSA opens October 1, 2026.

Families who submit in October receive more aid than families who submit in January. This is how South Carolina distributes need-based grant money.

1

Submit the FAFSA

Go to fafsa.gov on or as close to October 1 as possible.

Use the IRS Direct Data Import tool to pull your family's tax information automatically. Most families finish in 20 to 30 minutes.

2

List Florence-area schools

You can list up to 10 schools. Include these key codes:

Francis Marion University

003444

FDTC

003990

+ Your Choices

Add any 4-year schools

You can update the list later.

3

Review your Student Aid Index (SAI)

After submitting, review your SAI. This number determines your eligibility for need-based aid. Each college uses it to build your financial aid offer.

4

Watch for ECCF scholarship window

The 2027 window is expected to open in late fall or early winter. Young Florence SC will post an announcement when it does.
