There Is a Building on West Evans Street That Most Florence Students Have Never Walked Into

Free resume help. Mock interviews. Job placement. Career training. It's already here and it costs nothing.

May 13, 2026 Young Florence SC

Before a young person in Florence County applies for their first real job, they usually do one of two things. They either ask someone they know to look over their resume, or they just send it as-is and hope for the best. Most of them have no idea there is a professional, no-cost alternative a few minutes from downtown.

SC Works Pee Dee, located at 1558 West Evans Street in Florence, is a federally funded workforce center that offers career counseling, resume development, skills assessments, mock interviews, job placement services, and training connections, all without charging a cent to anyone who walks through the door.

The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No appointment required to start. Phone: (843) 407-9679.

Most young people in Florence do not know this place exists. That is the only thing standing between them and using it.

What Actually Happens When You Walk In

The SC Works Center is what the federal government calls a one-stop delivery system. That phrase sounds bureaucratic. In practice, it means career counselors, job search tools, a resource room with computers and printers, and direct connections to employers and training programs, all in one building.

Resume Development

Staff help you build a resume from scratch or improve one you already have. The SC Works Online Services system also includes a built-in resume builder that lets you create up to ten versions, each tailored to different kinds of work.

Skills Assessments

If you are not sure what kind of work you are suited for, the center offers career assessments that match your strengths to in-demand occupations. WorkKeys assessments, which measure workplace readiness, are also available and carry real weight with local employers.

Mock Interviews

A career counselor will run a practice interview with you before you go in front of a hiring manager. For a young person applying to their first job, that preparation changes the outcome of the real interview.

Job Placement

Staff connect job seekers with employers actively hiring in the region. Hiring events take place throughout the year at the Florence center and at partner locations across the Pee Dee.

Workshops

The center hosts regular sessions on job search strategies, how to fill out applications, interview best practices, and financial literacy. Topics rotate throughout the year.

Ages 14–24

If You Are Under 24, There Is Even More Available

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, known as WIOA, is a federal program that provides additional services specifically for young people. If you are between the ages of 14 and 24, you may qualify for priority access to financial assistance, case management, and paid training.

Out-of-School Youth

Ages 16–24. WIOA funding can cover the cost of vocational training, certification programs, and in some cases a GED.

In-School Youth

Ages 14–21. Services available to students who are low income and facing barriers to employment.

The Pee Dee Local Workforce Development Area, which covers Florence County along with Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, and Marion counties, administers these programs through the SC Works center.

WIOA funding can cover the cost of training programs, including certifications at FDTC. For many students, that means a credential with no out-of-pocket cost.

A counselor at the Florence location can walk you through eligibility in a single visit. No complicated applications upfront.

The Employers Are Already in the Room

SC Works is not just a place to polish a resume and wait. The Pee Dee Integrated Business Services Team works directly with employers across the region to identify hiring needs and connect them with qualified candidates.

On-the-Job Training Agreements

Where an employer receives reimbursement for training a new hire, are coordinated through the center. That structure gives employers a reason to take a chance on someone without prior experience in a specific field.

For a young person trying to break into manufacturing, healthcare, or logistics, that is a meaningful door opener.

You Do Not Have to Go Alone

If you are a student, a school counselor, or a parent trying to help someone figure out next steps, SC Works welcomes walk-ins and is set up to answer questions even if you are not sure what you need yet. The staff there are career professionals, not intake clerks. They are trained to help people figure out where they want to go, not just hand them a clipboard.

Online Portal

There is also a statewide online portal at jobs.scworks.org where you can upload a resume, search job listings, and access training resources at any hour.

But the Florence center offers something the website cannot: a real person who knows the local job market and can make a direct introduction.

Florence is a community with more free support for young people than most residents realize exists.

Young Florence SC is here to close that gap, one resource at a time.
