You have probably walked past a blank wall and not thought twice about it. A new studio just outside Florence would like to change that.
The Wallchemist Studio, based in Quinby and serving the Pee Dee, the Grand Strand, and the rest of the Carolinas, uses a vertical wall printer to put custom, full-color artwork directly onto a wall. It is not wallpaper. It is not vinyl you peel and stick. It is not a framed print you hang and later take down. The image goes onto the surface itself and becomes part of the room.
If you have seen this kind of work before, it was likely in a big hotel or a children's hospital. The idea is simple once you watch it happen. A bare hallway can become a forest. The wall behind a coffee bar can become the thing every customer stops to photograph. A nursery can hold a scene made for one particular child.
The studio prints on the surfaces a Florence-area building actually has: drywall, brick, concrete, wood, and textured walls. The work runs in four steps. They start with the space and the feeling you want it to leave. They design the piece to fit the room instead of sitting on top of it. They print it straight onto the wall. Then they step back and let you see the room changed.
"People don't remember walls. They remember how a place made them feel," said Trey Howard, who runs the studio.
That line is the whole idea. A lobby, a waiting room, a dining room, a classroom, an office, or a room in your own house can carry a piece of art that belongs to that place and nowhere else.
For a business owner, that means a signature space no competitor can copy. For a hospital or a school, it is a way to make a long day a little easier. For a homeowner, it is a room that finally feels like yours.
The Wallchemist is just getting started here, and the team is happy to let people watch the printer work. Seeing full-color art appear on a wall in real time is worth showing up for, and it makes for good photos and video if you run a page or shoot for one.
If you want to see examples, ask about your own space, or set up a look at the printer, you can reach the studio through their website, or on Instagram and Facebook.
